Phlebitis is inflammation of a vein, often related to IV therapy. The most telling sign is a red streak that runs along the course of the vein. This erythematous line reflects inflammation within the vein wall and is more specific to venous irritation than warmth, swelling, or itching, which can have other causes. When you see that red streak, it’s important to stop the IV, remove the catheter, and report for further assessment while monitoring for additional symptoms.
